A Virtual Table Top (VTT) is a platform that replaces the traditional tabletop RPG games format with a digital alternative. There are many that exist, but these are what my preferred virtual tabletops.
Foundry VTT is a robust virtual tabletop RPG platform that is self-hosted, meaning that it only requires the host to purchase a license. It offers an absolute glut of user created content (both premium and free), and it not only supports maps and tokens - but entire systems and rules sets as well.
A license for hosting Foundry VTT is $50, and this is my preferred Virtual Tabletop of choice.
(NOTE: THIS IS NOT A REQUIRED PURCHASE TO PLAY - ONLY PURCHASE IF YOU WANT TO RUN YOUR OWN GAMES)
Roll20.net is a great cloud-based platform that allows users a basic free account to play many different tabletop rpg systems. While the platform itself is robust, and well-maintained, you do have to deal with server downtimes occasionally. This has interfered with running games, from time to time, so Roll20 is not my preferred virtual tabletop.
However, Roll20.net is well-understood, easy to use, and popular. It definitely earns a mention.
Tabletop RPGs require communication and coooperation. To enable this, I use a variety of video/audio conferencing software. Most of which are free and easy to use.
Discord is a fantastic and versatile networking platform. After creating a username, you can find communities of relevance, make and receive audio/video calls, and so much more. I prefer Discord as my primary form of Audio/Video conferencing, due to robust features, great audio quality, minimal downtime, and the ability to create your own custom server for a game.
Discord is free, with a premium paid option for added benefits.
Zoom is a simple audio/video conferencing system that many people are familiar with. It's easy to use, requires minimal effort, and has some good integrations.
Zoom is a good option for folks who don't have/want a Discord account, or for those who have a preference for the interface.
Google Meet is another platform, similar to Zoom, that people can use for free audio/video conferencing. The nice thing about Google Meet, is that you probably already have a Google Account, so you are likely ready to use it.
Google Meet is another great way for gaming groups to get together, and offers an easy to use platform for all.
If you're playing a Tabletop RPG, then you're likely embodying a character. Characters have attributes, skills, equipment, and abilities that all require keeping track of. This is where Character Management applications come into play. There are numerous ways to track and manage a character's progress, but there are a few that stand out for me.
The Foundry VTT platform not only offers various game systems to install and play, but it also offers built-in character management. Basically everything you'll need to roll up a character is available via the software.
D&D Beyond is a free platform with premium features for creating and managing your Dungeons & Dragons characters. With many, many integrations and a thriving community, this platform is my preferred way to manage D&D Characters and Campaigns.
